What I Learned Visiting Vacuum Glass Suppliers in China

In 2026, I accompanied an overseas glazing buyer to visit three prospective Vacuum Insulated Glass suppliers in Shandong and Zhejiang. The sourcing brief concerned an overseas heritage-glazing application. The visits showed meaningful differences in the facilities and products presented, and in commercial communication. They also reinforced a more important point: a supplier site visit is useful evidence, but it is not supplier verification.

There are no site photographs attached to this article. The available first-hand source is a post-visit internal summary, not a contemporaneous inspection log. I did not receive or review original laboratory reports or certificates as part of the source set used here. The visited companies are therefore anonymised as Supplier A, Supplier B, and Supplier C.

Why I visited

Observed on siteThe visits took place in Shandong and Zhejiang and covered three manufacturers with visibly different facilities, approaches, and ways of explaining their products. I travelled with an overseas glazing buyer whose application involved heritage windows, where product geometry, visual details, safety requirements, documentation, and reliable cross-border supply all matter.

VIG Guide analysisSupplier selection for this kind of project cannot be reduced to finding a company that can make something called “vacuum glass.” The relevant question is whether a supplier can define the proposed construction precisely, provide evidence for the claims attached to it, reproduce that construction under controlled production, and support it after the product crosses borders.

The trip was not a laboratory audit, a certification audit, or a full factory-production-control assessment. It was an early supplier-evaluation exercise. That distinction shapes every conclusion in this article.

What I wanted to understand before the visits

Before entering a VIG factory, a buyer usually has several categories of uncertainty. Some are about the unit itself: the glass plies, the evacuated cavity, the support pillars, the edge seal, the low-emissivity coating, the getter strategy, and any evacuation port. Others concern evidence: which construction was tested, by whom, under what method, and whether the offered production unit actually matches the tested specimen.

Commercial readiness sits alongside the technical questions. Overseas buyers need written specifications, export documentation, packaging arrangements, a stable point of contact, a process for deviations, and a credible response if delivered units do not match the agreed build-up. A polished product sample cannot answer those questions by itself.

VIG Guide analysisI therefore treated the visits as a way to generate better questions, not as a pass-or-fail event. The useful outcome was a clearer verification plan: identify what was visible, record what was merely stated, and ask for independent or traceable evidence wherever performance was claimed.

The biggest lesson: a supplier site visit is not verification

A tour can show that equipment, people, samples, and some form of process are present. It can reveal whether the explanation is coherent and whether staff can answer questions consistently. It can also expose gaps between what a buyer expected and what was actually shown.

A tour cannot, on its own, establish long-term vacuum retention, thermal performance, impact classification, field durability, failure rate, or production consistency. A visible inspection station does not reveal the test method, acceptance criteria, calibration status, sampling plan, or disposition of failed units. Likewise, a large facility does not prove that the VIG line shown can make the exact construction being purchased.

VIG Guide analysisThe practical rule is simple: observation tells you what to investigate next. Documentation tells you what a supplier declares. Independent evidence may support a defined claim. Only a controlled purchasing and quality process connects those layers to the units that arrive on a project.

Three supplier visits, three different signals

The suppliers remain anonymous because the underlying source was an internal commercial evaluation containing sensitive identities and judgments. The purpose here is not to rank them. It is to show how different types of factory evidence should be interpreted.

Supplier A: a visible port and limited visible scale

Observed on siteAt Supplier A, I did not see a large-scale production line. The products shown had a visible evacuation port. Those observations describe only what was presented during the visit; they do not establish the company’s overall output, financial condition, or ability to manufacture other constructions.

Manufacturer-statedA representative stated that VIG without an evacuation port was not genuine VIG. I record that as a supplier statement, not as a technical conclusion. Another manufacturer later described a portless construction, which made the disagreement itself useful evidence about how suppliers frame competing processes.

VIG Guide analysisThe buyer lesson was not that a visible port is automatically unacceptable or that a portless design is automatically superior. The lesson was to ask each supplier to define how evacuation, sealing, residual-gas management, and inspection work in its specific construction—and then connect that explanation to drawings and test evidence.

Supplier B: visible production and an inspection stage

Observed on siteSupplier B had a professional showroom and a substantial visible production line. At the end of the line, I could see an inspection or testing stage. The facility and presentation appeared more developed, and the process explanation was easier to follow.

Observed on siteWhat I could not see from the tour was equally important. The visible stage did not identify the measurement being performed, its acceptance threshold, the sampling logic, the calibration record, the failure-handling process, or whether every product variant followed the same route.

VIG Guide analysisA visible quality-control step is a positive prompt for due diligence, not a substitute for it. The next request should be for the relevant work instruction, the defined acceptance criteria, an example record with sensitive data redacted, and traceability from the proposed product construction to the applicable test evidence.

Supplier C: large overall glass facilities and a newer VIG activity

Observed on siteSupplier C’s broader glass-business facilities were substantial. That observation applies to the wider glass operation visible during the visit; it does not establish the scale or maturity of the VIG process itself.

VIG Guide analysisThe post-visit summary characterised the VIG activity as newer and smaller within that overall business. A large parent operation may offer resources, but the scale of the wider glass business should not be confused with verified maturity of the VIG process being evaluated.

Manufacturer-statedThe supplier described a portless, getter-based VIG construction. An edge detail of approximately 11–12 mm was recorded in discussion. That dimension was not independently measured for this article and should not be treated as a universal specification or as verified production data.

VIG Guide analysisFor a heritage-glazing application, the relevant follow-up is to compare the declared edge detail with the actual frame, rebate, sightline, sealant, and installation design. “Portless” is a construction description, not a complete performance claim. The buyer still needs a controlled drawing, tolerances, samples, and the evidence tied to that exact build-up.

What the visible production process could — and could not — show

On a useful tour, a buyer should follow material and information flow rather than simply admire machinery. Ask where incoming glass is identified, how coatings are protected, how panes are paired, how pillars are placed, how edge-seal materials are controlled, how evacuation is achieved, and where the finished unit receives its traceable identity.

VIG Guide analysisThe strongest visible signal is usually coherence: the physical process, the technical explanation, the controlled drawing, and the quality record should describe the same product. If different staff use different terminology, if a sample cannot be linked to a build specification, or if an inspection stage has no clearly stated acceptance criterion, the buyer has found a question that must be closed before purchase.

The process still cannot prove performance across time. A unit may look intact immediately after manufacture yet fail later because of a seal defect, material interaction, thermal cycling, transport damage, or installation condition. A tour offers a snapshot. Verification requires evidence over defined test conditions and control over repeat production.

Support pillars: small components, large verification questions

Primary / independentSupport pillars keep the glass plies apart under atmospheric load and are part of the VIG product definition described in EAD 300021-00-0404. A factory conversation should move beyond whether pillars are visible. Ask how placement is controlled, how the declared layout is represented in the product drawing, how missing or displaced pillars are detected, and how the offered glass type interacts with the pillar system. If appearance matters, evaluate production-representative samples under the lighting and viewing conditions of the project.

Primary / independentPeer-reviewed work by Schulz and co-authors in 2022 examined pendulum-impact behaviour and identified pillar-to-glass contact as a fracture origin in tested specimens. That finding does not predict every commercial product’s behaviour; it explains why buyers should request evidence for the exact safety-glazing construction rather than assume that all VIG responds alike.

Edge seal: geometry is only part of the question

The edge seal is both a technical and an architectural interface. It helps maintain the evacuated cavity, but it also meets the frame, glazing compounds, cover dimensions, sightlines, drainage strategy, handling rules, and installation tolerances. A narrow declared edge does not solve an application if the surrounding installation system is incompatible.

Manufacturer-statedDuring the Supplier C discussion, the edge detail was recorded as approximately 11–12 mm. This was a supplier-side statement in a visit summary, not an independent measurement. It should be treated as a prompt to request a controlled cross-section drawing, tolerance, and production-representative sample.

VIG Guide analysisBuyers should distinguish edge-seal width from visible sightline, frame cover, required clearance, and the final installed appearance. They should also request the manufacturer’s handling and glazing instructions. A single dimension, even when accurate, does not describe the complete edge condition.

Toughened vs annealed VIG

“Can you make toughened VIG?” sounds like a yes-or-no question but is actually a product-definition question. The answer must specify which ply is treated, whether another ply is laminated, which edge-seal construction is used, and which safety classification applies to the exact proposed build-up.

Primary / independentEAD 300021-00-0404 recognises relevant glass types within the VIG assessment context. ISO 19916-4:2026 provides a VIG-specific pendulum-impact test and classification method. The earlier independent pendulum-impact research reinforces why evidence should be construction-specific. These sources do not mean every manufacturer offers every variant.

VIG Guide analysisThe purchasing specification should name the glass treatment and the evidence required for the target jurisdiction. A verbal assurance that a product “can be toughened” is incomplete until the supplier identifies the tested specimen, classification, report issuer, and relationship between that specimen and the units to be delivered. Why complete test reports matter more than certificate summaries

I did not review original certificates or test reports in the source material for these visits. I therefore cannot say that one factory’s evidence was stronger than another’s. The procurement lesson is prospective: ask for the underlying report, not only a logo, summary page, or general statement of compliance.

A useful report identifies the applicant, tested product, specimen build-up, test method, laboratory, dates, results, limitations, and any classification. A buyer should compare those details with the offered drawing and purchase specification. If the commercial product differs in glass type, laminate, coating, edge seal, pillar arrangement, or other controlled feature, the supplier should explain why the report still applies.

EAD 300021-00-0404 and the ISO 19916 series provide relevant technical contexts; ISO 19916-1:2018 is under revision, so references should identify the edition used. A standards reference is not self-proving: buyers still need to know what was tested and whether the offered unit matches it.

Production-capacity claims need context

The visit summary does not contain a reliable production-capacity figure for any of the suppliers. This article therefore publishes none. A visible line can indicate that equipment exists, but it cannot establish sustainable output, yield, staffing across shifts, maintenance downtime, order mix, or capacity available to a particular buyer.

VIG Guide analysisInstead of asking for one headline capacity number, request the assumptions behind it: the product construction, size mix, operating pattern, quality gates, typical constraints, and current order allocation. Then validate the supplier through a controlled sample and pilot-order process with agreed inspection and traceability, rather than relying on a tour-day estimate.

Export readiness is a system, not an English-speaking contact

Manufacturer-statedSupplier B described an existing UK-side representative or export route. This is useful commercial context, but it does not independently establish technical compliance, logistics performance, or after-sales capability.

Export readiness includes version-controlled English specifications, consistent quotation terminology, packaging appropriate to fragile evacuated units, shipment identification, document control, responsibilities at handover, and a workable non-conformance process. The overseas representative should know who owns technical questions and how issues are escalated back to the factory.

VIG Guide analysisFor heritage projects, communication must preserve detail. A change that sounds minor—glass treatment, edge geometry, coating orientation, visual mark, or installation clearance—can affect suitability. Ask the supplier to confirm the final build-up in writing and ensure the same identifier appears on drawings, order documents, inspection records, packing information, and any claim-supporting evidence.

What a factory visit still cannot prove

  • Long-term vacuum retention. A tour-day sample cannot demonstrate future performance.
  • Thermal or acoustic performance. Machinery and samples do not replace a report for the specific construction.
  • Impact classification. Safety behaviour must be supported by appropriate test evidence for the proposed build-up.
  • Consistent production quality. A visit is a snapshot, not a statistical production record.
  • Failure rate. The source material contains no reliable failure-rate data.
  • Available capacity. Visible scale does not show usable capacity for the buyer’s order.
  • Certification scope. A certificate title or mark does not show whether the purchased variant is covered.
  • Field suitability. The factory cannot decide compatibility with a heritage frame without project-specific information.
  • After-sales response. This is demonstrated through contracts, processes, and actual handling of issues.

VIG Guide analysisNone of this makes supplier site visits unhelpful. They are most valuable when the buyer arrives with an evidence plan and leaves with a documented list of open items rather than a general impression.

15 questions I would ask any VIG manufacturer

  1. What exact product construction are you offering? Request the controlled drawing and revision.
  2. How is the cavity evacuated and sealed? Ask the supplier to explain the process for this construction without assuming that ported or portless automatically means better.
  3. What is the getter strategy? Ask how it relates to residual-gas management and the declared product design.
  4. How are support pillars specified and their placement controlled? Connect the answer to the drawing and inspection method.
  5. What edge detail will be supplied? Separate seal width, visible sightline, frame cover, clearance, and tolerance.
  6. Which glass plies are annealed, heat-strengthened, toughened, or laminated? Require the answer for the exact offered variant.
  7. Which complete independent reports support the claims? Ask for the report, not only a summary or certificate image.
  8. Does the tested specimen match the offered construction? If not, request a documented applicability explanation.
  9. Which edition and scope of each standard is referenced? Do not treat a standard number alone as proof.
  10. What happens at the visible inspection stage? Ask for the method, acceptance criteria, calibration control, sampling logic, and failure disposition.
  11. How is each finished unit traced? The identifier should connect materials, production records, inspection, packing, and shipment.
  12. What packaging, handling, and glazing instructions apply? Confirm responsibility across the export route.
  13. How are changes and substitutions controlled? Require written approval before any construction change.
  14. How will a non-conforming unit be handled? Agree evidence, communication, containment, replacement, and corrective-action steps.
  15. What pilot order will demonstrate repeatability? Define samples, inspection, acceptance, and traceability before scaling.

What this means for overseas buyers

The visits did not produce a public ranking, and this article does not recommend one supplier over the others. They produced a better way to separate signals. Supplier A showed why supplier statements about what counts as “real” VIG should be tested against product definitions and evidence. Supplier B showed why a visible inspection stage should trigger detailed quality-control questions. Supplier C showed why the scale of a wider glass business and the maturity of its VIG activity must be considered separately.

Overseas buyers should build a verification chain from the project backwards. Define the frame and application constraints; define the exact VIG construction; identify the claims that matter; request the evidence; compare the tested specimen with the offered unit; and carry the same controlled identifier into the order and inspection process.

VIG Guide analysisThe best factory visit is not the one that creates the strongest feeling. It is the one that reduces ambiguity. A buyer should leave knowing what was directly observed, what the supplier stated, what independent sources support, and what remains unproven.
